STRUGGLE AGAINST CALAMITIES: -

What is a calamity?

A calamity is an unexpected, sudden disaster that may strike anybody at anytime anywhere without notice. It may cause loss of lives and/or properties.

How to prevent calamities?

Calamities prevention awareness is the only solution to save precious lives and properties from any calamities. Therefore, everyone should be always aware about how to save their precious lives and properties from various calamities.

How many types of calamities are there?
There are two types of calamities. They are

I. NATURAL CALAMITIES
II. MANMADE CALAMITIES

How can you prevent loss of lives and properties from different calamities?

The solutions to save your precious lives and properties from different calamities are as below:

I NATURAL CALAMITIES: -

1. FLASH FLOODS: - When inside: if ordered to evacuate or if rising water is threatening, leave immediately. Avoid small rivers or streams, low spots, canyons, dry riverbeds, etc. These can turn into raging floods in seconds. Do not try to walk through flowing water more than ankle deep. Do not allow children to play around streams, drainage ditches, viaducts, storm drains and other flooded areas. Do not drive through flooded areas even if it looks shallow enough to cross. The large majority of deaths from flash flooding happen when people drive through flowing areas. One foot (less than a third of one meter) deep of flowing water can displace 675 kilograms. Sixty centimeters of water can easily carry most of the automobiles. Roadways concealed by floodwaters may not be intact.

2. EARTHQUAKE: - If indoors: take cover under heavy furniture or against an inside wall and hold on. Stay inside. The most dangerous thing to do during the shaking of an earthquake is to try to leave the building because objects can fall on you. If outdoors: move in to the open, away from buildings, streetlights and utility wires. Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. If in a moving vehicle: stop quickly and stay in the vehicle. Once the shaking has stopped, proceed with caution to a clear area away from buildings, trees, over passes or utility wires. Avoid bridges or lamps that might have been damaged by the quake.

IF YOU CAN CHANGE ONE ---THEN YOU HAVE A VISION --- IF YOU CAN CHANGE MANY --- THEN YOU BECOME A MISSION----------------------------------------------------------------

3. HURRICANE: - During warning: Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for official instructions. If in a mobile home evacuate immediately. Store valuables and personal papers in a waterproof container on the highest level of your home. Avoid elevators. If at home: stay inside, away from windows and glass doors. Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy. Avoid open flames, such as candles and kerosene lamps, as a source of light. If power is lost, turn off major appliances to reduce power "surge" when electricity is restored. If officials say evacuation is necessary: leave as soon as possible. Secure your home by unplugging appliances, turning off electricity and the main water valve. Tell some one who lives outside the storm area where you are going. If time permits and you live in a flood zone, elevate furniture or move it to a higher floor. Avoid flooded roads and watch for washed-out bridges. Take warm protective clothing, blankets and sleeping bags to temporary shelters. Lock up the house and leave. Return home only after authorities advice that it is safe to do so.

4. LIGHTNING: - When inside: Avoid using telephone or other electric appliances. Do not take a bath or shower. If caught outdoors: Go to a safe shelter immediately. A sturdy building or hard - top automobile with windows up can offer fair protection. If you are swimming or boating, get out of the water immediately and move to a safe shelter away from the water. If you are in a wooded area, seek shelter under a thick growth of relatively small trees. When you are extremely scared, squat down with your head between your knees, keeping your feet flat on the ground. Do not lie flat. Avoid isolated trees or other tall objects, bodies of water, sheds, fences, convertible automobiles, tractors and motorcycles.

5. TORNADO: - In homes or small buildings: go to the basement (if available) or to an interior room on the lowest floor, such as a closet or bathroom. Wrap yourself in overcoats or blankets, or cover yourself with mattress, to protect yourself from flying debris. Stay away from windows and doors. In schools, hospitals, factories or shopping centers: go to interior rooms and halls on the lowest floor. Stay away from glass enclosed places or area with wide-span roofs such as auditoriums and warehouses. Crouch down and cover your head. In high-rise buildings: go to lowest floor interior small rooms or halls. Stay away from exterior walls or glassy area. In cars or mobile homes: abandon immediately. Most deaths from tornados occur in cars and mobile homes. Leave them and go to a substantial structure or designated tornado shelter. If no suitable structure is near by: lie flat in the nearest ditch or depression and use your hands to cover your head.

6. TSUNAMI/TIDAL WAVES: - Listen to a battery operated radio or television to get the latest emergency information and be ready to evacuate if asked to do so. If you hear an official tsunami warning or detect signs of a tsunami, evacuate at once. Climb to higher ground. A tsunami warning is issued when authorities are certain that a tsunami threat exists. Stay away from the beach. Never go down to the beach to watch a tsunami come in. If you can see the wave you are too close to escape it. Return home only after authorities advise it is safe to do so. A tsunami is a series of waves. Do not assume after one wave that the danger is over. The next wave may be larger than the first one. Stay out of the area.

7. VOLCANOES: - Follow the evacuation order issued by authorities. Avoid areas downwind of the volcano. If caught indoors: close all windows, doors and dampers. Put all machinery inside a garage or barn. Bring animals and livestock into closed shelters. If trapped outdoors: seek shelter inside. If caught in a rock fall, roll into a ball and protect your head. Avoid low-lying areas where poisonous gases can collect and ignite. Protect yourself: wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Protect eyes with goggles. Use a dust-mask or hold a damp cloth over face to help breathing. Keep car or truck engines off. Stay out of the area. A lateral blast of a volcano can travel many miles from the mountain. Trying to watch an erupting volcano is a deadly idea.

If hoses and adequate water are available, leave sprinklers on roofs and anything that might be damaged by fire. Be ready to evacuate all family members and pets when fire nears or when instructed to do so by local officials. Use caution when re-entering burned wild-land. Hot spots can re-ignite without warning. If trapped in a wildfire: you cannot outrun a fire. Crouch in a pond or river. Cover head and upper body with wet clothing. If water is not around, look for shelter in cleared area or among a bed of rocks. Lie flat and cover body with wet clothing or soil. Breathe the air close to the ground through a wet cloth to avoid scorching lungs or inhaling smoke.

Build a fire for heat and attract attention. Place rocks around the fire to absorb and reflect heat. Do not eat snow, as it will lower your body temperature. Melt it first. If Stranded In a Car or Truck: Stay Inside. Run motor for ten minutes each hour. Open the windows slightly for fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked. Make yourself visible to rescuers: turn on the dome light when running the engine. Tie a colored cloth to your antenna or door. Raise the hood after the snow stops falling. Exercise to keep blood circulating and to keep warm. At home or in a building: stay inside. If there is no heat: close off unneeded rooms, stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors, cover windows at night, eat and drink (food provides energy and heat, fluids prevent dehydration) wear layers of loose-fitting, light-weight and warm clothing.
